How to Prevent Someone from Stealing Your Arlo Camera

Arlo security cameras provide peace of mind by letting you monitor your home or business remotely. But like any valuable electronics, they can also attract thieves if not properly secured.

Which is exactly what happened in my case. Then, before the new installation, I did my research and came up with a bunch of methods to secure my Arlo camera from stealing.

Apart from choosing a better location, I focused on secure installation as well. Here’s what else I did.

Choose Inconspicuous Locations

Don’t make your cameras obvious targets by placing them in very visible or accessible spots. Mount them high up, out of direct sight lines, or hide them behind objects. Areas that are too secluded actually invite tampering though, so find a balance between visibility and concealment.

Use Secure Mounts

Arlo offers tamper-resistant mounts, screws, and enclosures to prevent easy removal. Use these specialized mounting hardware to securely affix cameras to walls or ceilings. Also run any wiring through walls and ceilings instead of along surfaces where they can be cut.

Enable Alerts

Link cameras to the Arlo app so you’ll be notified of any unexpected interference or disconnections. The app allows remote viewing to instantly check feeds if you receive an alert. Alerts can catch theft attempts in progress and scare off culprits.

Register Your Devices

Registering cameras with Arlo ties them to your account so they can’t be used by someone else if stolen. Arlo can also aid in identifying and recovering registered devices. Keep registration info and serial numbers documented in a safe place.

Use Visible Deterrents

Place visible warning signs and dummy cameras to make thieves think twice. Even just an Arlo brand sticker acts as a deterrent. Would-be thieves target areas that appear unsecured, so make it clear the property is surveilled.

Avoid Remote Placement

Don’t hide cameras in very remote spots far from activity. Areas that never see foot traffic actually raise suspicions for those looking to tamper unnoticed. Having cameras in plain sight where their feeds can be monitored works better as a theft deterrent.

What should I do if my Arlo camera is stolen despite these measures?

Contact your local law enforcement and provide them with the camera’s serial number and any available footage. Additionally, ensure that you’ve backed up your recordings to the cloud.

Can I install Arlo cameras indoors with the same level of security?

Yes, you can apply many of the same principles for indoor installations, especially password protection and monitoring.

Do Arlo cameras have built-in alarms or security features?

Some Arlo camera models may have built-in alarms, and Arlo offers various security features through their service plans. Check the specifications of your camera for details.

Endnotes

Though no security system is completely foolproof, following these best practices for your Arlo cameras can help avoid making your home an easy and appealing target for thieves. Taking preventative measures deters and detects camera theft attempts.
